Food & Cities is a collaboration between SLU Future Food and SLU Urban Futures. The project communicates SLU’s existing research and aims to create new encounters between different disciplines and sectors.

A low murmur of voices fills the amphitheatre in Uppsala city hall, as representatives from across the region gather to discuss this month’s agenda regarding the regional food system. There are farmers, shop owners, politicians, hobby gardeners, local residents, researchers, doctors, lorry drivers, school teachers, kitchen staff, lawyers and many more people from a range of occupations sitting in the chairs around the room.

Foodscapes refers to the complex inter-relations and connections between people, place and food. The production and consumption of food shapes, and is shaped, by social, spatial and discursive processes that play out across space, and over time. These processes take place within and across territories populated by multiple human and non-human actors operating at different levels and scales. Studying Urban Foodscapes offers a lens on sustainable urban development issues.
